Charles "Buzz" Bowers - Baseball Coach

 
 

Charles “Buzz” Bowers played quarterback in football, forward in basketball and pitcher in baseball at Wayland High School, but it was the spring game for which he is bestknown.

“Buzz” was a right-handed pitcher of note at Michigan State and eventually signed with the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League. Following his professional baseball career, Bowers returned to his alma mater and coached basketball, baseball, and skiing.
He became the Director of Physical Education and Director of Athletics at Wayland High School before retiring in 1987.

“Buzz” has been a major league baseball scout for many years. He was honored with the George Digby Scout of the Year Award in 1994 while scouting for the Boston Red Sox. In 2002, he was named the winner of the Turk Karam Memorial Award as the New York Professional Baseball Hot Stove League Scout of the Year.

Buzz retired from Wayland High School in 1987. He has been married to his wife Virginia for 55 years and they have four daughters: Debbie, Nancy, Lee, and Linda.
